Are we still alive ? Now that Zimbabwe had beaten Senga and have 6 points our chances don't look good, so what do you think we need to do in order to qualify or is it out of reach ?

EAST AFRICA SENIOR CUP CHALLENGE NEWS...

The Confederation of East and Central African Football Associations (CECAFA) has slapped a two-year ban on Ugandan referee Yusuf Auye. A statement issued by the acting Chairman of the CECAFA Disciplinary Committee, William Yeda, said Auye was punished for failing to handle the East and Central African Senior Challenge Cup quarter-final match between Rwanda ‘B’ and Ethiopia. The referee had allegedly failed to award a penalty when an Ethiopian striker was "clearly" fouled in the box. Rwanda `B’ won the game 1-0. The committee also reprimanded Ethiopian team officials after the team walked off the pitch, claiming that the "wrong" national anthem was being played for the team. The Ethiopians claimed that the anthem was used before Ethiopia split with Eritrea.
CECAFA has also banned Eritrea goalkeeper Araya Burhani for one year after the player assaulted Rwandese referee Gene Dibe during their preliminary match against Kenya. Burhani attacked Dibe after the whistler refused to annul Kenya’s goal which was hotly disputed by the Eritreans who claimed that the ball had not crossed the goal-line. Kenya won the match 1-0. Tanzanian referee Charles Manyama is also likely to earn CECAFA’s wrath after making a number of dubious rulings in the semi-final match against Kenya and hosts Rwanda ‘A’. Manyama disallowed two goals scored by the Kenyans in the bad-tempered match. The Tanzanian also ordered that a penalty be re-taken after the initial shot was caught by Kenyan goalkeeper Francis Onyiso. Kenya won 4-1 on post-match penalties. Meanwhile, Kenyan team officials said they had made it clear to CECAFA that they did not want a referee from Tanzania, Uganda or Rwanda to officiate the final on Saturday. They said match officials from the three countries had favoured their opponents in previous games

SUBJECT: Don't you think it's time for a new leadership in Eritrean Soccer Federation in North America?

I am writing this comment on behalf of our soccer team San Diego Warsai. As we all know, the organizers of Eritrean Soccer Federation in North America have been in position for couple of years. Therefore, our team and concerned Eritreans would like to know when and where the next election will take place? The reason why I am asking this significant question is because the above and other related questions were asked during San Diego's soccer tournament and after ward; however, nobody gave meaningfull and truthfull answer because these critical questions have never been raised before. Instead the organizers hide their weaknesses and continue to ignore such an important responsibilities and continue missuse and abuze the position for their own benefit. Don't you think it's time for a new election and new organizers for the best result?

SUBJECT: Western Union World Football

Dear Sirs, I am a producer-cameraman with a UK-based television production company called Tricky Pictures. We specialise in news and sports reporting from around the world and currently supply features to the Western Union World Football programme which is broadcast in 160 countries around the world. I am planning to visit East Africa in the next few weeks to make 4 or 5 features. I am currently researching stories we could cover in that region and am writing to you to ask if you have any suggestions. What is happening in Eritrean football at the moment? When does Eritrea play at HOME to Nigeria? Are there any good stories that could be broadcast around the world? I don't know if you have seen the programme, but we do several main types of stories: 1) The club profile - Interesting clubs with a colorful history (and present) are profiled, the club's fans and personalities interviewed etc. We are interested in all clubs, not only the large professional ones, but amateur ones too. Any interesting footballing story. 2)A player profile - An interesting and famous player of that country is interviewed and we see clips of him playing through his career. Maybe he has played abroad, or has even now finished as a player and is now doing something interesting or different. 3) A big match - For example, a cup-final, or a big "derby" match between two rivals of the same city or township. What football will be going on if I come to East Africa in April/May? 4) Something wierd - For example, I was in Guatemala recently where I made a feature about a team of blind footballers. I also made a feature about Guatamalan street kids and their love for football, and when I was in Thailand I did a feature about elephants that play football!! Anything can fall into this last category really, as long as it has something to do with football... I would very much appreciate your ideas on this subject. What stories do you think exist in East Africa? We are aticipating that our attentions will focus on Kenya and Ethipoia, but if there are good stories in Tanzania or Eritrea, for example, we would be interested in those too. Please help me by giving me any ideas you have, or by passing my details onto someone who could help me. If you want to find out more about my production company, Tricky Pictures, you may do so by looking at our web-site at www.trickypictures.com. Thank you very much, Matt Walker Producer

SUBJECT: Top Stuff Old Boys!

What an excellent performance by Eritrea to draw 0-0 with Nigeria. May this be a performance to be cherished by the Eritrean people and players for a long time yet. The players must have huge self-confidence right now and they must surely believe they can get a draw in Lagos. This would get us one step closer to knocking out the Nigerians and also to the next stage in qualifying as well. And another to all you Nigerians out there, you may have laughing when the draw came out. I bet you ain't now!

SUBJECT: Nigeria 4 Eritrea 0

I came here today hoping to see some comments on the result of the match between Nigeria and Eritrea (in Lagos), but saw nothing so far. I have been reading the comments on this website for the past few weeks, and I must say I was attracted to the great iptimism shown by Eritreans towards this match. I should however ask Eritreans to take things easy, as Rome was not built in a day. The country is barely a few years old in the soccer world, and already you want to start 'killing giants' like Nigeria. It took Nigeria about 20 years of participating in the nations cup before our first victory (in 1980), we also qualified for our first Olympic games (soccer event) back in 1966 and it took us between 20 and 30 years after our first attempt before we went to our first world cup (1994), and you guys think that you can achieve all this in a few years. Come on guys!!!! I wish Eritrean soccer all the best, and I hope with time you will have much to chear on the soccer field.

SUBJECT: Nigeria 4 Eritrea 0

Just to remind you guys of the role call of players who were missing from the match between Nigeria and Eritria in Lagos. I decided to compare the Nigerian team that played Cameroun in the Nations cup final to the team that played against Eritrea in Lagos. TEAM LIST (vs Cameroun) (1)Ike Shrounmu (2)Godwin Okpara (3)Celestine Babayaro (4)Taribo West (5)Furo Iyenemi (6)Sunday Oliseh (7)Finidi George (8)Nwankwo Kanu (9)Raphael Chukwu (10) Austin Okaocha (11) Mutiu Adepoju TEAM vs Eritrea (1)Nduibisi Egbo (2)Efetobore Sodje (3)Austin Fregene (4)Taribo West (5)Chikelu Iloanusi (6)Sunday Oliseh (7)Tijani Babangida (8)Benedict Akwuegbu (9)Jonathan Akpoborie (10)Henry Onwuzurikie (11)Garuba Lawal Note: Kanu came on late in the second half as a sub. A carefull look through the two lists will show you that only two players who started the nations cup final match against Cameroun also started the match against Eritrea. Most of the players on that team were new players to the eagles with several from the Under 23 team mixed with some old hands like Sunday Oliseh, Taribo West, Garuba Lawal and Tijani Babangida. Come on guys, what do you think would have happened if you had lined up against Austin (Jay Jay) Okocha, Finnidi George, Victor Ikpeba, Celestine Babayaro and others. Just to remind you these are guys who have defeated Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Roberto Carlos, Bebeto, and all the others in the Brazilian Olympic team of 1996. Several have played against Maradona, and Batistuta in the 1994 world cup, and many were in the team that defeated Raul, and Spain in the 1998 world cup. I think Eritreans should be proud of the goaless result achieved at home, but should not have expected any more than they got. More grease to your elbows guys. Regards. Olatunde (olatunde@fan.com)

SUBJECT: Our Eritrean National Soccer Team pace!

Hi, Eritreans and friends of Eritrea I was trigered to write by Olatunde Oladimeji ( a Nigerian). For better clarity, I will quote his words preceeding my opinion to it. Olatunde: " I must say I was attracted to the great optimism shown by Eritreans to ward the Eritrea vs Nigeria match." **THANK YOU Olatunde:" .. I shuold ask Eritreans to take things easy, as Rome was not built in a day." ** We Eritreans know not only the time taken to build Rome but the prices paid. Becuase it took us 30 years(the longest war in Africa and second in the world) to Get our precious INDEPENDENCE. WE paid blood and suffered alot, all of which is incorporated in to our heart. Therefore, When we talk about our team, it is no a dream, wish or simple optimism. It a reality. It might seem incomprehensible but it is real. Beating Ethiopia with its HUGE USSR HELP WAS quoted as meaningless dream of liberating Eritrea. But now, Yes now, IT IS REALITY. Olatunde:" .... It took Nigeria about 20 yrs of participating in the nations cup before our first victory in 1980. ....it took us between 20 to 30 yrs after our first attempt in 1966 before we went to our first world cup in 1994." ** stop mrs double 0(Olatunde Oladimeji). Because it took 20 yrs for Nigeria, it doesn't mean it will take us 20 or 10yrs as a matter of fact. we have our own pace and that PACE is incomparable to Nigeria's or any other nation. let me give some insight. Eritrean Football Association was only affiliated to CAF IN 1997 AND FIFA in 1998. When we were under the colony of Ethiopia, we had only two players that play with the Ethiopian nitional team. THIS SHOWS THAT WE STARTED FROM SCRATCH in 1991. AS the same time the people has to build the totally ruined country. The fact that we are in war with Ethiopia siince 1998 could greatly hinder our performance in football. But despite this all Obstacles, we tied Nigeria. We are so proud not only of the results but also of the efferts and sacrifice paid by the players, federation and the governmant and people of Eritrea. It is not only Nigeria, we had a lot of victories in 1999( only a year after the affiliation with FIFA). We tied Uganda in Asmara. we beat sudan twice 1-0. we eliminated Ethiopia 2-0. Beat Egypt 4-1(penality). " An 80th minute goal by Yohannes Fisehaye gave Eritrea its 1-0 victory over Mozanbique". In 23Jan99, Eritrea held Cameron(world cup qualifier) goalless, 0-0. And lost 1-0 in Cameron, in their home ground. waw, this all took only one year after affiliation to FIFA OR 8 years after independence( the ZERO START). I think by now , you should undrstood how fast is our national team moving/improving. If take us one year to tie NIGERIA, it will take one more year to tie it in Nigeria or beat Cameron ot home. it will take four years to be compared with any other team in the world including brazil. ONE YEAR, TWO YEAR OR FOUR YEAR MEAN NOTHING. MY POINT IS I WILL SEE IN THE WORLD CUP 2006, AS ERITREA IS QUALIFIED. DOES ERITREA JUMPS 11(ELEVEN PLACES) IN THE FIFA RANKING,IN ONE YEAR, MEAN SOME THING TO YOU? DOES IT TAKE YOU 20 YEARS TO JUMP 11 PLACE IN THE FIFA RANKING OR DOES IT TAKE YOU ONE YEAR? MY POINT IS WE HAVE OUR OWN PACE WHICH UNBLIEVABLE TO THE WORLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! MUCH TO SAY BUT I DON'T HAVE TIME. Lastly, double O SAID: " I WISH ERITREAN SOCCER ALL THE BEST, AND I HOPE WITH TIME YOU WIL HAVE MUCH TO CHEAR ON THE SOCCER FIELD." WE WISH THE SAME TO NIGERIA. WE WISH YOU GOOD LUCK IN THE 2002 WORLD CUP GAMES. BY THE WAY WE WERE CHEERING IN THE STREETS OF ASMARA WHEN NIGERIA WAS PLAYING IN 1994. YOU MADE US PROUD AS AFRICANS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WITH REGARDS, YOHANNES debesai

SUBJECT: Long live Eritrean soccer!

Hello, Eritreans. I felt a need to thank the Gentleman (Yohannes Debesai) who responded to my comments on the Encounter between Nigeria and Eritrea. I have to say I respect and admire his optimsism, and I look forward to seeing Eritrea at major football competitions in the not too distant future, starting with the African Nations cup (if possible in 2002). I would also like to thank Yohannes for his (and others) support for Nigeria, at the 1994 world cup, and I would like to mention that I supported Cameroun happily throughout their victories in the 1990 world cup despite our soccer rivalry with them. Long live African solidarity! Long live the beautifull game, and long live Eritrea, and Eritrean soccer! More grease to your elbows.
