Red Sea to battle Keneya in Champion League matchup!

Eritrean soccer club "Red Sea" not the national
team known as "The Red Sea Boyz" will be facing Kenyan
Club "Nzoia Sugar" in Nairobi this weekend. Red Sea
beat the Kenyan Club two weeks ago in Asmara so all
they have to do is win, tie or loose by 1-0 to
eliminate one of the more competitors of the Champions
League tourney of the best clubs in Africa. "Red Sea"
is representing Eritrea in this tournament.

Kenya hope Nzoia Sugar can provide some sweetness

JOHANNESBURG: Kenyan club Nzoia Sugar will carry a
heavy burden of expectation into the African Champions
League this weekend.

Football within the East Africa country is in turmoil
with the national junior team disbanded for using
over-age players and sports minister Najib Balala
threatening to dissolve the national association in a
related action. And events on the field brought no
cheer either with provincial club Nzoia making a
disastrous start to their first Champions League
campaign by losing 2-0 to underdogs Red Sea in Eritrea
two weeks ago.

The return match in the preliminary round is scheduled
for this weekend, along with eight other second leg
games in the Champions League and three in the Cup
Winners Cup. Nzoia finished runners-up to Nakuru
(formerly Oserian Fastac) in the national championship
only to secure a place in the three-million-dollar
showpiece of African club football when the league
winners went bust. Their first taste of international
fare came at the regional championship last month in
Uganda, where they defeated Borrer of Djibouti and
Muzinga of Burundi and lost a five-goal group thriller
to Simba of Tanzania. A three-goal hiding from
co-hosts Express in the quarter-finals was the first
hint that Nzoia might find the elevation from domestic
to international football more challenging than
anticipated.

Red Sea also exited at the quarter-final stage, losing
to Muzinga in extra time, but not before they raised a
few eyebrows with pool wins over Khartoum 3 of Sudan,
Mlandege of Zanzibar and Young Africans of Tanzania.
These victories and a narrow loss to co-hosts and
eventual winners Villa had a positive psychological
effect as they took control in the second half against
Nzoia and Suleiman Mohamed and Fassil Abreha scored.
Playing in the Eritrean capital, Asmara, is formidable
given fiercely partisan fans and a pitch so bumpy that
former Zimbabwe coach Clemens Westerhof famously
claimed even a four-wheel-drive vehicle would struggle
to cross it. With more favourable playing conditions
and home support, Nzoia are capable of cheering a
football-crazy nation that found solace this week in a
shock Cricket World Cup victory for Kenya over Sri
Lanka in Nairobi.

But Sugar dare not concede another goal as it would
leave them needing to score at least four to secure a
first round date with defending champions Zamalek of
Egypt during April. Many of the Champions League ties
are finely balanced with Wallidan of Gambia,
Nouadhibou of Mauritania, Adema of Madagascar, Simba
of Tanzania and La Passe of Seychelles taking one-goal
leads to foreign fields. Douanes of Togo are better
placed having held El Nguema 0-0 in Equatorial Guinea
while Villa, who bring a 4-1 lead to Muzinga, and
Rayon Sport of Rwanda, 3-1 victors over Saint George
in Ethiopia, seem certain to progress.

South African outfit Jomo Cosmos, forced to
pre-qualify in the Cup Winners Cup because they
entered late, should see off Defence Force of Lesotho
having drawn 2-2 in the tiny mountain kingdom. The
other ties are diffciult to call with Pobe of Benin
defending a 1-0 lead over Agadez in Niger while
Olympic Moka of Mauritius hold a 3-1 advantage as they
prepare to tackle Fortior in Madagascar.. AFP

Cecafa Cup 2001 Eritrea vs Kenya 12/10/2001
Keynay go to the wire

Kenya go to the wire

Eritrea were unlucky to come away with nothing By Sport Online's Alexis
Masciarelli in Kigali Click here for results and standings.

Eritrea came close to producing the first big upset of the Cecafa
Challenge Cup on Monday against Kenya.  The Harambee Stars trailed the
Eritreans for most of the game, giving away the ball easily and then missing a series of chances.

Yidnekachen Shimangus scored the opener just before half time, punishing
the Kenyan defence after a poor clearance. Eritrean keeper Abdulsalah Suleman made great saves on several occasions,
and looked as if he would deny Kenya even a point.

But the Harambee Stars broke the deadlock with 15 minutes to go when Tom
Juma headed home a free kick from the left. And five minutes from time, Maurice Sunguti gave the Harambee Stars an
undeserved victory.

The players from the Horn looked like schoolboys compared to their bigger,
tougher opponents, but their commitment won them the local crowd's
support.

The evening's second game between Rwanda 'B' and Zanzibar had none of the
tension of the first.  Both sides were very poor, showing little skill or
guile.

There was evident boredom in the stands at halftime with the score
standing at 0-0.

Rwanda finally got their act together and sunk Zanzibar with three goals
in the last quarter.

Thrilling Eritreans win fans' respect

Saturday, January 27, 2001

By NATION Correspondent

Despite losing 0-2 to Uganda's SC Villa, Red Sea of Eritrea got a standing
ovation from fans at the Mombasa Municipal Stadium soon after referee
Abdallah Bhagazal blew the final whistle on Thursday.

The Eritreans are out of contention after losing two consecutive games -
3-0 to Kenya's Oserian in the opening match and 2-0 to Villa.
But fans have been highly impressed by the brand of soccer displayed by
the gritty Eritrean side and many voted Red Sea as the most entertaining
team of the tournament thus far.

The team won the hearts of Coast fans with their short, crisp and accurate
passes even at a time when they seemed to be under great pressure.
The boys in red did not lose their fighting spirit even when they were
down, and neither did they resort to rough play.

This is in sharp contrast to the attitude displayed by most teams in the
region in which players' tempers rise once they realise that they are
headed for a loss.
Red Sea can only count themselves unlucky not to have won against Villa as
they created more than 15 clear scoring chances but on each occasion, they
failed to hit the target.

Their star strikers Frezehi Behne, Fasil Abraha and Medhane Aghada were a
constant threat to the overworked Villa defence which nevertheless managed
to hold together.
In fact, Villa's first goal came against the run of play when the Ugandan
team's defenders cleared a dangerous ball only for a Red Sea player to
handle in the box at the opposite end with Andrew Mukasa scoring from the
resultant penalty.

STAR STUDDED NIGERIA FAIL TO BEAT TEN-MAN ERITREA

The Super Eagles of Nigeria parading all but two of their big boys last Sunday failed to impress against Eritrea as they were held to a barren draw by that north African country rated as soccer minors in the first leg Japan / South Korea 2002 World Cup qualifying match in Asmara.

The Nigerians having appeared in the last two editions of the world Cup finals, won the African Nations Cup twice, won the Olympic gold medal with almost the same set of players were expected to overrun their Eritrea counterparts but this was not to be. The biggest shock is that for the last 32 minutes of the encounter, Eritrea played with only ten men as Emmanuel Yadu was sent off by referee Andad Asman but the Nigerians could not capitalize on that. The Red Sea boys could have staged an upset as a 25th minute free kick hit the woodwork.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian players who are used to lush green fields in Europehave attributed their lack lustre performance to the poor pitch of the secondary school where the match was played The return leg encounter billed for lagos in a fortnight now becomes dicey as the Eagles would be playing under pressure.

JOHANNESBURG (June 20, 1999 2:01 p.m. EDT http://www.sportserver.com) -
Eritrea edged closer to a soccer
fairytale on Sunday just 50 kilometers from a bloody border war.
The tiny East African state defeated Mozambique 1-0 in the final African Nations Cup Group 1 fixture to record its first success since entering international football a year ago. Success before a capacity crowd at the Asmara Stadium lifted Eritrea above Mozambique into second place. It will face Zimbabwe and Senegal during July and August for a place at the 2000 finals. Yonas Fishaye scored the only goal after 80 minutes to become an instant hero in a country fighting an increasingly brutal war with southern neighbor Ethiopia. Both countries claim to have killed and wounded thousands of enemy troops without revealing their own casualty figures since war erupted in May 1998 over disputed land.

Eritrea, which held 1984 and 1988 Nations Cup winner Cameroon goalless in a previous home match, hosts Zimbabwe on July 3 in the opening match of the playoffs. Senegal qualified as runners-up to Burkina Faso in Group 5 after defeating Burundi 1-0 in Dakar through an 11th-minute goal from Belgian-based striker Salif Keita. Victory confirmed a gradual improvement in the form of the Senegalese Lions since veteran German coach Peter Schnittger
took charge last December following a 1-0 loss in Burundi.

Senegal begin their playoff programme at home to Eritrea in mid-July and face Zimbabwe twice between August 1-7 in matches likely to determine who advances to the finals next January.  Co-hosts Ghana and Nigeria, defending champions Egypt, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Gabon, Morocco, South Africa, Tunisia and Zambia have booked places at the biennial showcase
